on

FLYING DONKEYS ON CLOUD NINE

Chievo picked up nine points from their last three matches to secure a magnificent comeback to stay
in Serie A. Benevento were already relegated to Serie B even before kick off.
The opening minutes were dominated by Benevento as Chievo looked very nervous from the off
knowing survival was not a full gone conclusion and it showed despite winning their last two
matches.
After 13 minutes Cataldo (Benevento) came close to opening the encounter shooting from just
outside the box but Sorrentino (Chievo) was on hand and made a brilliant save to keep Chievo’s
hopes alive. However, 11 minutes before half-time Chievo had the ball in the back of the net with a
superb cross wonderfully picked up by Inglese who slotted it into the Benevento goal but the ref
ruled it out for offside with the help of the contentious VAR.
As the second half got underway Chievo came out looking a lot more determined even if results
elsewhere were going their way in their bid to stay up. Chievo finally made the breakthrough that
they were so desperately looking for. The 49 th minute turned out to be the match winner when
Inglese scored after a blinding shot by Hetemaj (Chievo) from the edge of the box which was saved
by Puggioni (Benevento) only for the ball to fall to Inglese’s feet for an easy tap in. The Bentegodi
erupted into scenes of joy.
Minutes later Chievo almost doubled their lead when Puggioni misread a cross in from Birsa but
Dainelli was unable to hook onto it. Apart from a great chance on the 66 th minute and a late chance 4
minutes from time Benevento could not quite get the much deserved equaliser. Chievo managed to
hold onto their slender lead and maintain their tenth consecutive season in Italy’s top flight.
As the final whistle was blown the ‘flying donkeys’ were already celebrating another successful
relegation battle which came right down to the wire. It was not a vintage performance from the
‘gialloblu’ but they will not mind. Benevento, on the other hand put up a spirited fight but having
nothing really to play for will have to pick up the pieces and try to make their way back up to Serie A
from the Italian second tier following their glorious promotion last season.
